Speaker cable is the wire used for the electrical connections between speakers and amplifier sources. The only difference is that speaker wire typically has clear outer insulation, while electrical wire might be black, brown, white or some other color. That similarity isn't an illusion; the wires are very much alike and can be used interchangeably in many circumstances.
Like all cables, it has three main properties: capacitance, inductance, and resistance. As a result of the environment in which speaker wire operates it is the resistance that is the most important. This is brought about by the relatively low frequencies used and the system impedance. Most speaker systems have an impedance of anywhere between around three or four ohms up to around 15 ohms.
